Some people can't get enough of Las Vegas. They come from all over the world to queue up for schmalzy over-the-top shows, step outside from the casinos and get instantly dehydrated in the ever-present searing UV rays, shlep their footlong plastic frozen margaritas down the overcrowded strip, drag their screaming kids through the hotel shops, gamble away their life savings while smoking their last pack of Marlboros and heading back to the all-you-can-eat $14.95 surf-n-turf buffet.

Sorry for being a total elitist snob on this post. Let me tell you what I did enjoy on my trip this week.

There are so many things I love about being a dinner date companion as it generally involves 1) flirty conversation 2) sipping cocktails 3) feeding each other yummy bites 4) usually followed by a show. What was sad about this trip is I had no dinner date or anyone to share it with (I know, so sad it should be a crime!) But a girl's gotta eat, and it's unfortunate to be in Vegas and have champagne and caviar tastes on a Schlitz and Spam budget. I was pleasantly surprised when I came across Estiatorio Milos in the Cosmopolitan Hotel, and there was already a line forming before it opened at noon so I knew there was a buzz about this place. I was seated outside on their covered deck with a view of the strip, and the $22 prix fixe menu was very generous on selections. I got the Greek meze appetizer plate of traditional spreads and cheeses that pared well with the warm grilled bread. Milos is known for fish, so my main course was the Lavraki (whole grilled sea bass) and the best I’ve ever had prepared this way- flaky, buttery olive oil, briny lemony capers, mmm. Dessert was house made thick and insanely creamy Greek yogurt which balanced nicely the with sour raspberry compote.

So being alone in Vegas wasn't so bad after all. And I even found a Dunkin Donuts to remind me of the watered down, so-bad-it’s-good hazelnut iced coffee I miss so much from my summers back east. You don't know what you got until you have to go all the way to Vegas to get it.
